What Is Fosamax?
Fosamax is the brand name of alendronic acid, a bisphosphonate drug used to prevent bones from weakening. It was released onto the market in the late 1990s and is still manufactured and prescribed today.
Fosamax Injury Statistics
In 2008, studies showed that there was a connection between the use of Fosamax and broken bones. Researchers discovered that long-term female users are 125 times more likely to have a fracture in the femur, the strongest bone in the body. Many women had suffered unexplainable fractures that were not caused by a fall or trauma.
In 2010, the FDA alerted doctors of this possible side effect. The American Society of Bone and Mineral Research concluded that there was a strong correlation between serious bone fractures and long-term use of Fosamax.
The researchers studied 310 patients who had femur fractures, and a staggering 94% of the patients surveyed had been taking Fosamax for five years or longer. Merck continues to manufacture Fosamax despite this published research.
